The real bottleneck in oral practice

What oral practice lacks has never been questions, but the number of times students open their mouths. Shy students dare say even less in front of their peers, and often rehearse only a handful of times across a whole term. To break through, you first have to handle two things separately: getting everyone to speak more, and the teacher listening to each one. The first can go to a tool; the second is where the teacher truly comes into their own.

AI handles the volume, teachers handle the quality

The approach can work in two layers. The first layer is carried by AI: students use an AI voice tool to simulate the individual response or group interaction, practising as many times as they like, with the tool giving immediate feedback on fluency, word choice and pausing. Shy students need not lose face in front of others; they can practise in private until they feel confident, then come back to class.

The second layer is left to the teacher: once every student has a fair amount of practice behind them, class time no longer has to go on taking turns to speak, and can instead focus on shared weaknesses such as pronunciation, connectives and the depth of an argument, with the teacher modelling and running group practice on the spot. AI does the volume, the teacher does the quality.

Setting up: start with simple scenarios

The actual set-up need not be complicated, and can build up step by step.

  • One, pilot one question type first, say the individual response, and set AI practice as a fixed pre-class task each week
  • Two, give students clear assessment criteria so the AI feedback aims at what Paper 4 is marked on, not general speaking tips
  • Three, ask students to keep at least one practice recording or piece of tool-generated feedback as proof of how much they have practised
  • Four, each week the teacher samples a few, draws out the problems common to the class, and models the fix in the next lesson

A privacy reminder about students' voice data

Speaking practice collects students' voices, which is personal data and comes under the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. Before choosing a tool, confirm a few things: where the recordings are stored, how long they are kept, whether the supplier uses them to train models, and whether they can be deleted once the programme ends. In its clarification on the programme, the EDB reminds schools to assess packaged solutions carefully, and voice tools in particular call for a close look at the data terms. The programme also requires schools to keep a separate account and retain records for at least seven years, so record this clearly at the point of purchase; and before rolling it out across the year group, informed consent from parents should be sorted out first.

The parts AI cannot do

There are two things that should not be handed to AI. The first is the final grade: the live interaction of an oral, how well the content stays on topic, and the depth of reasoning still belong to the teacher's judgement, and the AI's instant feedback is only a practice aid, not marking. The second is relationship and confidence: an oral tests whether you dare to express yourself in front of a real person, and that sense of the moment, along with the encouragement between teacher and student, is not something a machine can give. What AI widens is the volume and the chances to practise; what takes a student into the exam room is still the teacher.
